On June 29, Google Earth celebrated ten years of existence and with this occasion, the mapping application received some features that will help the users explore better the world in front of their computer screen. So, the two features that were added to Google Earth are Voyager and Earth View, with a collection of images.

The two features were announced by Sean Askay, Engineering Manager at Google Earth, who posted on Google’s blog a brief history of Google Earth, how it evolved in ten years of existence and how much this software helped various categories of users, especially children in schools and even NASA scientists. Askay said that Google Earth “has the potential to make the planet a far more connected place, if you take the time to explore, discover and share what you learn. So to celebrate how far Google Earth has come and our leap into the next 10 years, we’ve created a few new ways to help you better see places from around (and above) the world”.

Voyager can be accessed only on computers, for now, and with it, you’ll be able to visit various famous locations on this planet, as the first edition included five sections: Earth View, Street View integration, Highlight Tour, 3D cities and satellite imagery updates.

Street View includes major world landmarks in Street View within the Google Earth app, Earth View shows landscapes from around the world as seen from space, 3D cities shows a list of cities that have been completely rendered in 3D, satellite imagery updates shows areas which have recently been updated with new imagery, and the Highlight Tour gives you a quick tour of various Voyager locations.

Earth View has been updated and now it offers 1500 new landscape images (you’ll be looking at the planet from above and you’ll love these landscapes so much that you’ll want to have them as wallpapers on your smartphone). You’ll have access to them through the Web gallery or using a Chrome extension.

This year, Google decided to make the Google Earth Pro a free application, after until January, it was available at $399/year. Initially, this service was called EarthViewer 3D, because it wasn’t developed by Google, but by a company named Keyhole Inc.

Google Earth is supported by computers running on Windows, OS X, Linux, and on mobile devices running on iOS and Android.
